Choosing Paper: A Fresh Step Forward for Windy Hills Farm
At Windy Hills Farm, we always look for ways to grow better — for our customers, community, and planet. That's why we've transitioned our sleeved herb range from plastic to eco-friendly paper sleeves. It's a small change that makes a meaningful difference.
Why Paper?
Paper is renewable, recyclable, and kind to the earth — a natural fit for a farm that values care and longevity. Unlike traditional plastic, which can take hundreds of years to break down, paper decomposes naturally in weeks or months. It's part of a circular economy, where materials are reused, recycled, or returned to the soil to start the cycle again.
To maintain the clarity and visibility our customers love, we use a small acetate film window, allowing you to see the freshness inside while keeping the sleeve recyclable and compostable. The paper and acetate offer both practicality and sustainability — protecting our herbs while reducing waste
A Greener Approach
In Australia, paper and cardboard are recycled at rates around 60–65%, compared to only 12–14% for plastics. Choosing paper means choosing a material that's more likely to be given a second life. Even when paper fibres weaken after multiple cycles, they can still be composted, returning nutrients back to the earth — the ultimate form of sustainability.
Our Commitment to Progress
This shift is part of a bigger story. Alongside our Integrated Pest Management (IPM) practices, which introduce beneficial insects to reduce chemical use, our move to paper sleeves is another step toward a healthier ecosystem where every decision supports long-term sustainability.
Every herb we grow and every sleeve we use reflects our values: Freshness, care, and responsibility. Because for us, it's not just about what we grow — it's about how we grow it.
